Waterman Series 2020 Season, Paddlesports Racing, and COVID-19
We are one race into the 2020 season and while myself and other event organizers want nothing more than to continue with our spring events it would be selfish on our part. COVID-19 has introduced an unprecedented situation for the entire world, and my thoughts are with all those affected by this global pandemic. Currently, public health experts, elected leaders, and communities are undertaking unprecedented actions to respond to and mitigate the spread of this virus. So, in turn, I believe it is our responsibility as athletes and event organizers participating in a voluntary activity to do our part to control the spread of this illness.
For the race events a part of the 2020 Waterman Series this means adhering to the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and public health officials which could involve the postponement or canceling of race events. I know you have been training all winter, spending time on the erg, and looking forward to the competition and camaraderie of the season. However, just one racer who’s an asymptomatic carrier of COVID-19 can easily transmit the virus at a gas station, hotel, to a fellow competitor, grocery store, and from there the number of cases can quickly multiply burdening local healthcare systems (many of our events are in rural areas without many clinics, practitioners, tests, or ICU beds). There is also a need to make sure emergency and other governmental resources are dedicated to fighting the virus, not providing support for an event.
There’s nothing wrong with getting out, getting some fresh air, and hitting the water. In fact, it will be vital during this time of social separation and for some, quarantine. The most important thing is taking care of yourself, and those close to you. But please #StayHome and do so on your local waterway. As for the Waterman Series we always be here! I am working on a concept where folks will still get to race and earn points through the introduction of the #VirtualWatermanSeries. I have more updates on that here soon! Also please contact the individual event organizer to find out their specific plan and note that this situation is fluid.
Sincerely,
